A suspected IED explosion killed one person and injured four others after targeting an Assam Rifles vehicle near Sukhovi in Nagaland on Monday. Security forces have launched an operation in the area, with further details pending.
The incident is the second attack on Assam Rifles personnel in the Northeast in under a week. On July 6, two soldiers—Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Rifleman CM Singh—died after militants ambushed a convoy in Manipur’s Ukhrul district. Both sustained critical injuries and later succumbed despite medical aid, officials confirmed.
Assam Rifles: Frequent target in Northeast insurgency
The Assam Rifles, India’s oldest paramilitary force, plays a central role in security operations across the Northeast. Tasked with guarding the India-Myanmar border and counter-insurgency duties, its personnel are often targeted by militant groups.
In November 2023, four Assam Rifles troops were injured in a Manipur ambush near Border Pillar No. 87, close to Saibol village. The attack followed a prior encounter in Chandel district, where the force killed 10 suspected militants.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the identity of the latest casualty or the condition of the injured. Search operations remain active in the affected areas.
