A groom in Jharkhand’s Bokaro district arrived at his wedding on a bullock cart, rejecting dowry and lavish displays of wealth. Janardan Kumar Mahto of Teliadih Tangtona village married Shweta Kumari of Mungo Bagda village in a ceremony devoid of dowry or modern extravagance.

Bullock cart as a symbol of tradition

The bullock cart served as both transport and the focal point of the wedding. After the rituals, the bride’s farewell was also conducted on the same cart, reinforcing the couple’s commitment to simplicity. The procession featured traditional Kudmali folk music and a horse dance performance, with guests walking to the venue.

Community effort behind the anti-dowry statement

Local villagers supported the initiative, with Mithilesh Mahato painting the cart and Bhubaneswar Mahato decorating it in Kudmali style. The wedding adhered to the customs of the Kudmali community, an indigenous group from the Chota Nagpur plateau region spanning Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, and Bihar.

The families framed the event as a revival of local traditions and a stand against dowry and extravagant celebrations. The wedding has since drawn attention for its emphasis on values over materialism.
