Spain defeated France 2-0 in the FIFA World Cup semifinal on Tuesday in Arlington, Texas, advancing to their first final since 2010. Goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro secured the victory, ending France’s run in the tournament.
Spain’s dominance in the World Cup semifinal
The match began with Spain controlling possession and tempo, stifling France’s attack from the outset. France, who entered with the tournament’s most lethal offensive record, managed only two shots on target as Spain’s pressing and ball retention left them with little opportunity.
Oyarzabal opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, converting a penalty after Lamine Yamal was fouled in the box. Spain nearly doubled their lead before halftime, but Dayot Upamecano’s last-ditch tackle denied Fabian Ruiz a clear chance.
Porro seals Spain’s place in the final
Pedro Porro extended Spain’s lead just before the hour mark, exchanging passes with Dani Olmo before finishing calmly. France, unable to break through Spain’s organized defense, saw their key players—including Kylian Mbappe and Michael Olise—largely neutralized.
Spain will now await the winner of England vs. Argentina, set to be decided on Wednesday in Atlanta, to determine their opponent in Sunday’s final.
