Stephen Fleming’s 18-year run with Chennai Super Kings is over. The franchise and its long-serving head coach have mutually agreed to part ways after nearly two decades of dominance.
Fleming’s CSK legacy: 5 IPL titles and a dynasty built
From player in 2008 to head coach in 2009, Fleming became the architect of CSK’s success. Under his watch, the Super Kings lifted five IPL trophies and two Champions League T20 crowns, reaching the playoffs a record 12 times and contesting 10 finals.
But recent seasons brought rare struggles. After their 2023 title, CSK slumped to ninth in 2024, fifth in 2025, and eighth in 2026. Fleming’s final stint with a Super Kings side—Texas in the MLC—ended with a bottom-place finish.
Tributes pour in from CSK management
CSK owner Rupa Gurunath called Fleming the “heartbeat” of the coaching unit. “For nearly two decades, he shaped our identity, vision, and pursuit of excellence,” she said. “His unwavering commitment and leadership leave a legacy that will endure.”
Managing Director KS Viswanathan echoed the sentiment, highlighting Fleming’s role in building a culture of consistency and humility. “His ability to bring out the best in individuals was unmatched,” Viswanathan added.
Fleming’s emotional farewell
Reflecting on his time, Fleming said: “Eighteen years is a lifetime in sport. My time with CSK has been the privilege of my coaching career. We celebrated unforgettable victories, overcame tough moments, and built memories that will last forever.”
The Kiwi legend signed off with a promise: “CSK will always be close to my heart, and I’ll be cheering the team on for years to come.”
