The BCCI will conduct a full review of India’s T20I team after their historic series defeat to England, marking their first bilateral T20I series loss to the hosts. The board confirmed the meeting will focus solely on addressing the team’s shortcomings in the ongoing tour.
India’s T20I slump: A first for England
India’s downward spiral continued as they lost back-to-back T20I series—first to Ireland, then to England. The third T20I at Trent Bridge saw their heaviest defeat in the format against England, sealing the series with one match left on July 11. This is the first time England have beaten India in a bilateral T20I series of two or more games.
Under new captain Shreyas Iyer, India are winless in six matches—five losses and one no-result. The much-hyped debut of IPL Orange Cap winner Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has also fizzled, with scores of 14, 13, and 15 in his first three international outings.
BCCI’s stance: “A bad phase”
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, currently in Edinburgh for the ICC conference, downplayed the crisis. “The BCCI is observing the team’s performance, which hasn’t been up to the mark. This can happen in international cricket—we consider it a bad phase,” he said. The review will involve core team members and focus strictly on performance.
ODI series next—can India bounce back?
With the T20I series lost, India now shift focus to the three-match ODI series, where legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma return. The BCCI hopes for a turnaround, with Saikia adding: “Since there is an ODI series, we’re hoping the team will be back in good form.” The review meeting will take place after the ODI series concludes on July 19.
