The Aditya Birla Group will invest an additional ₹12,000 crore to expand its greenfield alumina refinery in Odisha’s Rayagada district, raising the project’s total outlay to ₹20,000 crore and tripling capacity from 1 MTPA to 3 MTPA. The move, announced by Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla after meeting Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, underscores the conglomerate’s deepening commitment to India’s aluminium value chain.
Capacity Expansion and Economic Impact
Hindalco Industries, the group’s flagship metals arm, is executing the Kansariguda refinery project, initially budgeted at ₹8,000 crore. The expansion aligns with Odisha’s push to leverage its mineral resources for higher-value manufacturing, with the state government pledging support for land, infrastructure, and approvals. The project is expected to create significant direct and indirect employment, alongside opportunities for local enterprises and downstream industries.
Strategic Context: Odisha’s Metals Hub Ambitions
Majhi emphasized aluminium’s central role in Odisha’s vision to become India’s leading metals and metallurgy hub, aiming for global competitiveness across refining, primary metals, and advanced products. The announcement follows the state’s recent MoU with Adani Enterprises and International Resources Holding for a ₹1.08 lakh crore integrated aluminium project, signaling intensifying investment in the sector.
Broader Investment Pipeline
The meeting also reviewed the Aditya Birla Group’s existing and proposed investments in Odisha, spanning aluminium, chemicals, cement, renewable energy, and textiles. Discussions explored potential expansions into copper refining, copper-clad laminates, printed circuit boards, paints, jewellery manufacturing, and advanced aluminium products, indicating a multi-sector growth strategy.
With proactive state backing and long-term demand for aluminium, the additional investment reinforces the group’s bet on Odisha as a critical manufacturing base. For investors, the move highlights Hindalco’s scaling ambitions and the region’s emerging industrial ecosystem.
