Anthropic has begun offering Claude subscriptions in Indian rupees, making its AI chatbot more accessible in its second-biggest market after the U.S. The move addresses long-standing friction for Indian users, who previously faced dollar pricing and currency conversion fees.

Claude’s India pricing: Pro, Max, and Team plans

On its website, Anthropic lists Claude Pro at ₹2,000 per month (billed annually), compared to $17 in the U.S. Claude Max starts at ₹11,999 per month in India versus $100 in the U.S., while Team plans cost ₹2,399 per seat monthly (vs. $20 in the U.S.). Prices include local taxes but may vary slightly on mobile apps.

  • Claude Pro: ₹2,000/month (annual billing)
  • Claude Max: ₹11,999/month
  • Team plan: ₹2,399/seat/month

Why this matters for India’s AI users

India accounts for 5.8% of global Claude usage, but payment friction has been a hurdle. Unlike OpenAI’s ChatGPT—which added UPI support with its rupee pricing—Anthropic still requires card payments or app store billing. This could limit adoption in a market where UPI dominates digital transactions.

The shift reflects Anthropic’s growing focus on India, including a Bengaluru office and partnerships with Infosys and TCS. However, its June restriction on non-U.S. access to some models (later partially lifted) showed the challenges of scaling globally. Converting India’s price-sensitive users to paid plans remains a test for AI providers.
