Bhogapuram International Airport, developed by the GMR Group at a cost of ₹4,750 crore, is poised to become a key economic driver for Andhra Pradesh, with its inauguration expected to accelerate trade, tourism, and logistics growth in the region.
Strategic Investment and Infrastructure
The greenfield airport, spread across 2,203 acres, represents a significant infrastructure investment by the GMR Group. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the facility, which has been fast-tracked by the state’s NDA government since its foundation stone was laid in May 2023.
Design and Operational Capabilities
The airport’s terminal, inspired by a flying fish to reflect North Andhra’s coastal identity, integrates contemporary architecture with digital technology. Features include:
- Self-service kiosks and automated baggage handling systems
- Modern security screening and spacious check-in areas
- A 3,800-metre runway capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft
- Advanced category-I instrument landing system for safer operations in adverse weather
Initially designed to handle 4.75 million passengers annually, the airport’s master plan allows for future capacity expansion.
Economic Catalyst for North Andhra
Beyond passenger services, the airport is expected to spur investments in logistics, hospitality, and aviation services. The Visakhapatnam Economic Region has already attracted nearly 40% of the ₹24 lakh crore investments in Andhra Pradesh over the past two years. GMR has earmarked 25 acres for Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities, signaling a potential boom in aviation-related businesses.
