The Big Bash League’s 16th season kicks off in style as Melbourne Renegades host defending champions Perth Scorchers at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium on December 12. The historic clash marks the BBL’s first-ever match outside Australia, starting at 2:40 PM IST.
BBL’s first international fixture: A landmark moment
Unveiled by Australian PM Anthony Albanese and Indian PM Narendra Modi at the MCG, this game is a diplomatic win too—backed by both governments to strengthen Australia-India ties through cricket. Cricket Australia’s Alistair Dobson calls it a “hugely exciting” chance to tap into India’s massive cricket fanbase, predicting record viewership for an Australian domestic league match.
The Chepauk venue, endorsed by BCCI and Australian officials, was scouted by a CA-BBL delegation in May. The stadium last hosted Australia during the 2023 ODI World Cup, where they lost to India before lifting the trophy.
Why Renegades? Flexibility and fan appeal
All eight BBL clubs wanted in, but the Renegades’ schedule—now shifted from Marvel Stadium to the MCG—offered the best fit. Their move ends a 15-year Marvel era, with GM Max Abbott calling the MCG a chance to “create more occasions like last season’s 68,000-strong Melbourne derby.”
- Renegades’ MCG fixtures this season: 3 matches (2 home, 1 away vs Stars)
- Previous MCG outings: Beat Hurricanes (2021), lost to Thunder by 1 run (2022)
With private investment talks swirling, this match could be a test case for BBL’s global ambitions. Next stop? A potential fan frenzy in cricket’s heartland.
