Six abandoned houses belonging to the Meitei community were set on fire in Manipur’s Kanto Sabal area near Leimakhong Army Camp on Saturday, officials said. The incident occurred around 12:30 pm, with security forces stepping in to prevent a wider communal confrontation.

Arson incident and security response

A large group from neighbouring Kangpokpi district, reportedly part of a rally against an inter-district economic blockade, allegedly torched the vacant properties. The houses had been unoccupied since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023. The affected owners were identified as L. Sanathoi, L. Rajesh, L. Rahul, L. Nungshitombi, T. Leiri, and Kangjam Guni.

As flames spread, nearby Meitei villagers attempted to march toward the site. Army and Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel intercepted the crowd, using tear gas and baton charges to disperse the gathering. Local residents claimed three people sustained minor injuries during the confrontation.

Arrests and ongoing investigation

Security forces arrested two individuals in connection with the incident: Kammang Lhouvum, chief of Hengjang village and chairman of the Leimakhong Area Protection Committee, and Pagin Hangshing, a resident of Khunkho Kuki village. Manipur Police confirmed a criminal case had been registered and efforts were underway to apprehend others involved.

Protesters later accused security forces of failing to prevent the arson despite their presence. Civil society groups, including Apunba Ima Lup and Imagi Meira, criticized the government’s handling of the situation, demanding equal enforcement of the law and impartial security measures.

Fragile peace in Manipur

The incident highlights the ongoing ethnic tensions in Manipur, where violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May 2023 has claimed hundreds of lives and displaced thousands. Authorities urged all communities to maintain peace and cooperate with investigations to prevent further escalation.
