The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has fixed retail prices for 39 new drug formulations under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order (DPCO), 2013, a move that directly impacts affordability for patients and pricing compliance for manufacturers. The notification, issued on July 8, covers essential medicines for hypertension, diabetes, HIV, and heart disease.
Fixed Prices for Key Drug Formulations
The NPPA’s order specifies retail prices for critical medications, including:
- Amlodipine + Bisoprolol + Telmisartan Tablets (hypertension): ₹14.74 per tablet
- Nepafenac + Moxifloxacin Ophthalmic Solution (eye infections): ₹68.64 per ml
- Clopidogrel + Aspirin + Atorvastatin Capsules (heart attack/stroke prevention): ₹6.37 per capsule
Compliance and Enforcement Under DPCO 2013
Retailers and dealers must prominently display manufacturer-provided price lists, as mandated by DPCO 2013’s Para 24(4). Non-compliance with the notified prices will require manufacturers to deposit overcharged amounts plus interest, per the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.
The NPPA clarified this is a price fixation order, not a reduction, emphasizing adherence to the new rates. For investors, the move signals regulatory scrutiny in the pharmaceutical sector, with potential margin pressures for companies marketing these formulations.
