Baghpat district administration has launched a keychain-sized personal safety alarm for women, designed to emit a loud siren and flashing light in emergencies. The initiative, introduced by District Magistrate Asmita Lal, aims to bolster women’s security under the Centre’s Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign.

How the Women’s Safety Alarm Works

The compact device, easily carried with keys or in a bag, activates a continuous alarm for nearly two minutes when triggered. Officials state the siren can be heard up to 50 metres away, alerting bystanders to potential distress. A built-in flashlight provides additional visibility in low-light situations.

Lal distributed the alarms to women employees at the Collectorate office, with plans to expand distribution to schoolgirls, working women, Anganwadi workers, ASHA workers, and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives. Girls receiving the HPV vaccine will also receive the device.

Reaction to the Safety Initiative

Women who received the alarms welcomed the measure, citing increased confidence while travelling or working outside their homes. A healthcare worker noted the device’s practicality, emphasizing its ability to draw attention in vulnerable situations.

The administration framed the initiative as part of a broader effort to enable women and girls to participate in education, work, and daily activities with greater security. Further expansion of the programme is expected.
