A 28-year-old woman in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, died by suicide after a prolonged battle with a spinal disorder, leaving a handwritten note expressing gratitude toward her in-laws. Nikki, also known as Vaishnavi, was found dead on [date not specified in original]; police confirmed her distress stemmed from her medical condition.

Suicide note praises family, cites helplessness

In her note, Nikki wrote that she was breaking her promise to stay with her family forever but urged them not to grieve. "You are blessed if you get such an in-law's family. Everyone took great care of me. Please don't be sad. I am taking this step out of helplessness," she stated.

She also left instructions for her belongings, requesting her scooter and jewellery—purchased with her father's money—be gifted to her younger brother-in-law's future bride. Her mobile phone, which she noted was old, was to be given to her mother-in-law.

Background: Marriage, career, and health struggles

Nikki married Shivam Shukla, a Railways employee in Madhya Pradesh, nearly three years ago. She had been undergoing treatment for her spinal illness in Kanpur and Delhi. Recently, she cleared the written stage of the Delhi Police recruitment exam but feared her health would hinder her progress in the next round.

Family members stated they had ensured she received continuous medical care. She is survived by her husband and a young son.

Police investigation and family reaction

Rawatpur police arrived at the scene after receiving information about the incident and sent the body for postmortem. Assistant Commissioner of Police Dilip Singh said the note indicated her distress was solely due to her medical condition, with no allegations raised by either family.

Shivam Shukla, her husband, told authorities, "My wife was my life. Even though she was ill, she was my companion. I don't know why she took this step. We would have continued her treatment." Further legal action will follow the postmortem report.
