The U.S. Department of Justice has accused jailed Indian gangster Lawrence Bishnoi of using WhatsApp and encrypted messaging apps from Sabarmati Jail in Gujarat to extort victims in Los Angeles and Thousand Oaks between December 2025 and January 2026. The DoJ alleges demands of up to $5 million, alongside coordination of assassinations, drug trafficking, and other crimes through a global network.

Transnational Crime Network and High-Profile Cases

The DoJ describes Bishnoi’s operation as a transnational crime syndicate. Authorities link him to the 2023 murder of pro-Khalistani activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar and a 2023 shooting at a Canadian celebrity’s home. Smuggled phones were allegedly used to direct violence, extortion, and human trafficking, with his public image as a “patriot” aiding recruitment across India, the U.S., and beyond.

Jail Conditions and Legal Response

Bishnoi has been held in solitary confinement under 24/7 surveillance since 2023, facing 84 cases across Indian states, with 40 acquittals or discharges. His lawyer, Rajni Khatri, denied the WhatsApp allegations, stating, “If he was using the app, authorities must provide evidence.” The Indian government has restricted his movement under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, with court appearances conducted via video conference.

Parallel Investigations by NIA and DoJ

India’s National Investigation Agency previously accused Bishnoi of running his gang from prison, comparing his rise to underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. The NIA’s 2022 chargesheet detailed how jailed associates, including Goldy Brar, coordinated the 2022 murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. Funds from extortion were allegedly funneled to Canada, the U.S., and Dubai to support pro-Khalistan activities.

Neither Indian nor U.S. officials have commented on the latest DoJ allegations. Observers await further evidence or extradition requests as investigations continue.
