West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari traveled to Murshidabad by road on Friday after heavy rain forced the cancellation of his planned flight. The visit, his first to the district since taking office, includes key political and administrative engagements.
Adhikari's Murshidabad schedule and political context
Adhikari is set to attend a BJP organizational meeting in Berhampore, followed by an administrative review at Rabindra Sadan. Later, he will address a party gathering in Rejinagar, a politically significant event following recent remarks by Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) founder and Nowda MLA Humayun Kabir.
Weather disrupts travel plans
Heavy monsoon showers affected large parts of West Bengal, with Cooch Behar recording the state’s highest rainfall at 143 mm in the 24 hours ending Friday morning. Officials confirmed that adverse weather conditions made flying unsafe, prompting the road travel decision.
“We had planned for the Leader of Opposition to travel by air. However, continuous rain and prevailing weather conditions made flying unviable. After reviewing the situation, it was decided he would proceed by road,” a senior official stated.
Rejinagar meeting draws attention
The Rejinagar event has drawn political focus as the constituency is a stronghold of Humayun Kabir, who recently faced controversy over alleged inflammatory remarks. Adhikari had previously accused Kabir of attempting to polarize voters ahead of an expected bypoll, after Kabir vacated the Rejinagar seat, which his son may contest.
Kabir maintained his remarks targeted those who joined the BJP in Murshidabad after the Assembly elections and allegedly threatened him. Adhikari had also informed the Assembly that two criminal cases were registered against Kabir at Shaktipur and Rejinagar police stations.
