Floods in Tripura have displaced around 11,000 people and damaged 4,027 houses across three districts after heavy rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday, officials confirmed on Friday.
The swollen Manu River began receding later in the day, easing the flood situation, though the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of further heavy rain in parts of the state.
Displacement and relief efforts in Tripura
State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) Project Director Sanat Kumar Das reported that 6,068 people from Unakoti district were housed in 35 relief camps. In Dhalai and Khowai districts, another 4,909 affected individuals took shelter in similar facilities.
No fatalities have been reported, but the floods have left thousands homeless in low-lying areas.
Allegations over delayed sluice gate repairs
Congress MLA Birajit Sinha claimed that the Water Resources Department’s failure to repair sluice gates in time contributed to flash floods in Unakoti, Dhalai, and Khowai. A government official acknowledged that 19 sluice gates in Kailashahar subdivision, meant to regulate the Manu River’s flow, remained unrepaired due to tender delays.
The official added that repairing the gates and strengthening embankments was critical to preventing future flooding in Kailashahar.
