Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commissioned INS Mahendragiri, the sixth and final Project 17A frigate, in Visakhapatnam on July 11, 2026. The warship, built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), is the first Indian Naval vessel to bear the name.

INS Mahendragiri: A Testament to Indigenous Defence

Designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, INS Mahendragiri features over 75% indigenous content, aligning with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The frigate integrates advanced stealth features, reduced radar signatures, and a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system for high-speed operations.

Equipped with surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missile systems, electronic warfare capabilities, and anti-submarine warfare systems, the vessel is prepared for multi-domain missions. Its Combat Management System supports anti-air, anti-surface, and humanitarian operations.

Defence Minister Highlights Conventional and Future Warfare

Speaking at the commissioning, Singh emphasized that while AI may shape future wars, victory still depends on national resolve, trained soldiers, and conventional military power. He noted that new technologies and traditional platforms complement each other, with conventional capabilities remaining essential.

Singh also underscored Andhra Pradesh’s role as a growing hub for defence and aerospace manufacturing. He reaffirmed India’s position as the largest stakeholder in the Indian Ocean Region, stressing the link between maritime security and economic health.
