A devastating landslide occurred near Kalladi in Wayanad, Kerala, on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, resulting in at least one confirmed death and several people feared trapped under debris. The incident took place near the entrance of the under-construction Wayanad tunnel road project linking Kozhikode to Wayanad.

Landslide Causes and Impact

The massive mudslide was triggered by torrential monsoon rains, which caused a concrete retaining wall to collapse, sending a torrent of mud and debris onto the site. Several vehicles were found crushed and buried, and authorities fear that more workers or heavy machinery operators may still be trapped beneath the debris.

According to officials, at least seven people are missing, and seven have been hospitalised. Rescue operations are underway, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local police, and Fire and Rescue services actively engaged in the efforts.

Rescue Operations

Rescue efforts are being hampered by heavy rain and thick mud, complicating the use of earth-moving equipment. At least five people have been pulled alive from the debris and shifted to a hospital. Wayanad District Collector D.R. Meghashree and other senior officials have arrived at the site to oversee the rescue operations.
