Maharashtra Police have arrested Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre in connection with an assault on two doctors at a municipal hospital in Dombivli on Monday. The incident occurred after a dispute arose over the treatment of a newborn baby.

Background to the Assault

The trouble began when doctors at the civic-run hospital advised a family to transfer their newborn baby to another hospital for specialized treatment, as the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) was full. The family allegedly contacted Mhatre, who arrived at the hospital with several associates and assaulted the doctors.

CCTV footage of the incident showed Mhatre and his associates entering the hospital and attacking the two gynaecologists, Dr Srushti Baviskar and Dr Vaibhav Salunkhe. Dr Salunkhe sustained injuries, and two nurses who intervened to protect the doctors were also manhandled.

Aftermath and Reaction

The assault sparked widespread outrage and protests among the medical fraternity, with doctors demanding strict action against Mhatre and his associates. The incident was escalated to Municipal Commissioner Abhinav Goyal, and a police complaint was filed against Mhatre.

Thane Lok Sabha MP Naresh Mhaske distanced the Shiv Sena party from Mhatre's actions, stating that internal disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against the corporator. Mhaske confirmed that the party had served a show-cause notice to Mhatre.
