Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel declared "all is well" in Punjab’s party unit after a high-stakes meeting in Chandigarh on July 11, amid an ongoing power tussle between factions. The AICC general secretary in charge of Punjab reiterated that leaders remain aligned with the high command, with no immediate changes expected to the state leadership.

Punjab Congress Leadership Dispute

The meeting at Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjit’s residence included sitting and former MLAs, following tensions over the party’s state leadership. Charanjit Singh Channi’s faction has pushed for the removal of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, but Baghel stated that appointments by the high command are final.

Baghel told CNN-News18 that he had heard the Channi faction’s concerns and would relay them to the high command. He added that no discussions on ticket distribution for the 2027 Punjab Assembly Election had taken place, though only "capable candidates" would receive nominations.

Recent Developments in Punjab Congress

On July 1, the Congress confirmed Raja Warring’s continuation as state president, while Channi was named chairperson of the election campaign committee. Channi, reportedly dissatisfied with the decision, had initially avoided meeting Baghel but later invited him to address worker sentiments.

Baghel’s visit included multiple rounds of meetings with state leaders, reinforcing the high command’s stance against leadership changes. The party’s focus now shifts to resolving internal differences ahead of the 2027 polls.
