Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu has denied the Centre’s role in the removal of the film Satluj from Zee5, stating the decision was likely commercially driven. Speaking in Ludhiana, Bittu accused actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh of prioritizing money and questioned the narrative that the government pressured the OTT platform.

Bittu Questions Satluj’s Brief OTT Availability

Bittu highlighted inconsistencies in the film’s release, noting Dosanjh had previously said Satluj would only stream for “two-three days” before removal. “If the government intended to censor it, why allow it to air at all?” he asked, suggesting the makers pulled the film after meeting revenue targets. “The government has no control over OTT platforms,” he added.

Criticism of Satluj’s Portrayal of Punjab’s Militancy

The Union Minister also criticized the film’s depiction of Punjab’s insurgency era, arguing it presented a “one-sided story.” While not opposing films on the topic, Bittu challenged director Honey Trehan and Dosanjh to create a project honoring police sacrifices during the 1980s. “Will they make a movie about the officers assassinated in 1984?” he asked.

Background: Satluj’s Controversial Release

Satluj was removed from Zee5 within 48 hours of its July 2026 release, sparking speculation about political interference. The film references the Beant Singh government’s counter-insurgency efforts—a period Bittu, Singh’s grandson, has defended despite human rights allegations. Dosanjh’s prior statement about the film’s limited OTT window fueled further debate.

Industry figures and social media users continue to demand clarity on the removal, with calls for transparency from Zee5 and the filmmakers.
