Uttar Pradesh is set to launch its largest tree plantation drive, Vriksharopan Mahabhiyan 2026, on July 12, with a target of planting 35 crore saplings in a single day, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced on Monday. The state government aims to increase the state's green cover to 15 per cent by 2030 and 20 per cent by 2047.

Ambitious Afforestation Targets

The state government has set an ambitious target of planting 35 crore saplings annually for the next five years as part of its plan to boost green cover. According to the government, Uttar Pradesh has seen a rise in forest and tree cover in recent years, with an increase of nearly 3.38 lakh acres between 2017 and 2023.

Between 2017 and 2025, the state reportedly planted 242 crore saplings, a significant jump from the 51.48 crore saplings planted between 2009 and 2016. The Chief Minister stressed that the success of the campaign would depend not only on the number of saplings planted but also on their protection until they grow into trees.

Public Participation and Biodiversity

Yogi Adityanath called for the involvement of citizens, students, farmers, public representatives, and government departments in the plantation campaign. The state plans to plant a mix of fruit-bearing, medicinal, shade-giving, and timber trees to improve biodiversity. Initiatives such as Mission Chhaya, Samriddhi Van, City Van, and Aushadhi Van are also being implemented.

  • Target: 35 crore saplings on July 12
  • Green cover target: 15% by 2030, 20% by 2047
  • Saplings planted between 2017-2025: 242 crore

The Chief Minister directed officials to ensure proper preparation, including verification of plantation sites, availability of saplings, and regular monitoring. The state aims to emerge as a model for green development by linking environmental conservation with public participation.
